Our Culture
Culture...What Is it Exactly?
If you're anything like me, you've probably heard the word culture countless times. I always knew it was important, but for years it was just another buzzword to me. It wasn't until I began coaching that I truly stopped to think about what culture actually is and how profoundly it shapes every athlete, every team, and every organization.
The challenge is that nearly every hockey program claims to have a great culture and says they're "all about the kids." The truth is, those words don't mean much on their own. Culture isn't defined by what you say, it's defined by what you consistently do.
The more I reflected on it, the more I realized that culture isn't something you can hang on a wall or write in a mission statement.
Culture is how people feel.
At Hull Hockey, culture is how players and families feel every time they walk through our doors.
It's the feeling a player has when they step onto the ice. It's the confidence they carry with them when they leave. It's knowing they're valued, respected, and encouraged...not just for the goals they score or the team they make, but for who they are as a person. A healthy culture creates a genuine sense of belonging. It builds community, strengthens relationships, and gives every player and family the feeling that they're part of something bigger than themselves.
Because of that, every single decision we make, every coach we hire, and every conversation we have is filtered through one simple question:
"How will this make our players and families feel?"
If the answer doesn't align with the culture we're trying to build, we don't do it. It's that simple.
When a culture is truly authentic, people don't have to be told it's special. They can simply feel it.

Our Recipe For Transformation
When we talk about culture, one of the biggest factors shaping how players and families feel is our coaching philosophy. Every interaction, every drill, every correction, and every word we use is intentional. We believe the way a player is coached is just as important as what they're being coached.
For years, we described our mission with one word: development. But after witnessing the nearly impossible growth our athletes experienced during last year's Frozen Summer Academy, we realized that word no longer tells the whole story.
What we now strive for is transformation.
So what is our philosophy? See Below!

Very Industrious...But Even More Rewarding
One of the things that makes Hull Hockey different is our ability to challenge players far beyond their comfort zones, whether they're in 8U years old or high school. If you've ever watched one of our youngest 8U groups, you've probably noticed that we coach them with an energy and intensity that many programs don't use until much later. That's not because we're louder or tougher, it's because we've earned the trust to coach them that way! The player-coach relationship comes first, and once that foundation is built, kids become willing to embrace challenges they never thought possible. When players are willing to step outside their comfort zones and embrace hard work, we make sure they know it doesn't go unnoticed!
At Hull Hockey, positive reinforcement goes far beyond a simple, "Good job." We celebrate effort with genuine excitement, contagious energy, and authentic enthusiasm. Whether it's mastering a new skill, pushing through a difficult drill, or finding the confidence to try something they've never done before, we celebrate those moments together.
When our players succeed, we celebrate as if we've accomplished it ourselves, because in many ways, we have. Their growth becomes our greatest reward, and nothing brings us more joy than watching them realize what they're truly capable of.
I'd be lying if I said our coaching style isn't intense at times. We challenge our players in ways a lot of other programs can't. The difference is that our athletes know we're in their corner every step of the way. That trust creates an environment where they embrace being coached hard, pushed well beyond their comfort zones, and achieve results they never thought possible.
